Scuderia Leone
A look back at 2016
February 06 2017

As we prepare for a full year of action in both rFactor 2 and iRacing we take a look back at the first year of Scuderia Leone to show where it all started.

Although 2016 was our competitive debut, Scuderia Leone was formed by Kevin Rotting and Ruben Correa Alves at the end of 2015. Two drivers were selected just to look at interesting places to race and to learn about what would be the first simulator for the team, rFactor 2. Ruben Correa Alves and Jeffrey Koopman entered the SRVN GT Championship halfway trough the season with the objective to gain experience.

Kevin Rotting jumped in to get some rFactor 2 experience too as we prepared for our first full season in 2016! Our cars got their first proper design and we entered three different championships under the SRVN banner: GT, DTM and DTCC. This national league was the perfect place for us to start out as we were able to gain more experience and develop the team. Our first season was pretty successful as Kevin Rotting won the GT title, Kevin Heijnen won the DTM title and Scuderia Leone won the teams titles in both championship!

We were halfway trough 2016 and we felt we were ready for our international debut. We decided to enter the Virtual Endurance Championship. Just like in 2015 when we started out, we entered this championship halfway trough as well so our only objective was to gain experience, especially the endurance part of racing. We got Hany Alsabti on board for the 12 Hours of Sebring and Hany together with Kevin Rotting pulled of a spectacular stunt as they won the GT PRO class of the event! Due to the success we entered our car for the next race, the 6 Hours of Istanbul and we won again!

We were ready for the next step! Our ambition from the start has always been to get to the highest level in simracing. In order to truly find our limit we had to look further than only rFactor 2 and had to give iRacing a shot as well. A new chapter needed new cars so we completely redesigned our liveries to make them stand out better, choosing for a nice contrast between colors and a splash of white.

Kevin Rotting took a small group to explore iRacing and the opportunities for competition. While they were looking into those things, our remaining drivers entered the rFactor 2 GT and Porsche Cup championships in the second SRVN season of 2016, so that they could still be active in a competitive environment and stay on top of their game. It was the first full season for Arjan Veltens and he impressed immediately as he took the SRVN Porsche Cup title and helped the team in taking the teams title!

To end 2016 we entered the qualification championship for the 2017 iRacing WCS Blancpain Endurance Series with two Mercedes-AMG GT3's. We unfortunately did not make the cut but we learned a lot, gained yet more experience and along the way shot some nice footage too!

We are in 2017 now and we are planning our next steps. We have gained experience and build a team from scratch. We have pulled in some talented drivers over the last year, active in both rFactor 2 and iRacing. We will be racing with SRVN again in the rFactor 2 Porsche Cup and the new USF2000 Championship . And in iRacing we have Boris Spoelstra currently leading the iRacing Formula Renault 2.0 Championship and Coen Klopman representing Scuderia Leone in the Ford GT class in the ProtoGT Series. This is just the start, with much more to come this year!
